Gall Bladder Surgery

The gall bladder is an organ used by the body to store bile to be used during digestion. There are many reasons for having gall bladder surgery. For one, it is used to repair an inflamed or obstructed gall bladder, typified by the disease cholecystitis. It is also used to remove gall stone deposits inside the gall bladder that can cause obstruction in the organ itself. Another major cause for concern is gall bladder cancer, wherein the gall bladder must be removed from the system.

Cases where the gall bladder is removed

The gall bladder is a non-essential organ. In cases where the gall bladder is removed, the functionality is replaced by the liver. The bile flows out of the liver into the small intestines instead of from the gall bladder.

Cholecystectomy

The procedure is known as a cholecystectomy. The first part involves the making of an incision on the abdomen. Air is pumped into the abdomen to allow the surgeon a clearer view. The gall bladder is then removed through the cut. Techonological advancements have made a new type of cholecystectomy possible. It involves the use of a laparoscope- a device with a scope used to see inside the body, to remove the gall bladder. The advantage of this type of procedure is that instead of a large incision, only a few smaller incisions are required.

Gall stone removal surgery

Gall stone removal is another important aspect of this type of surgery. There are many factors that can cause gall stones, one of which are the gall stones themselves as they can cause even more gall stones to develop. Other causes include: weight, diet, age and ethnicity. Gall stones can block bile ducts leading to an incident known as a gall bladder attack. It typically causes a sharp pain on the abdomen. Frequent gall bladder attacks necessitate the removal of the gall bladder
